You Oughta Know: Thomas could join elite company

With just 18 holes left to play at the WGC-Mexico Championship, the top of the leaderboard is packed with big names like Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson. Here’s what You Oughta Know for Sunday:

• Thomas is seeking fourth win in nine starts this season on the PGA Tour. Since 1960, only three players have racked up four wins in a season before the Masters: Arnold Palmer in 1960, Johnny Miller in 1974 and David Duval in 1990.

• Thomas, who leads by one is 3-for-4 at converting 54-hole leads in his PGA Tour career (2-for-2 this season).

• Thomas is one of three players since 1970 to three times in his first five starts of a season, joining Johnny Miller and Tiger Woods.

• Johnson is one-shot back despite being ranked 74th of 76 players at putting inside 10 feet (13 misses this week). The world No. 1 leads the field in proximity to the hole through three rounds.

• Johnson is trying trying to become the second player with four or more WGC wins. Only Woods (18) has more.

• McIlroy (two back) could move to No. 1 in world with a win and a solo fourth or worse from Johnson. McIlroy is seeking third win in his last five PGA Tour starts dating back to last season and has trailed entering the final round in six of his twelve stroke-play Tour wins.

• Mickelson’s (two back) wild Saturday in Mexico included two hole outs, three rules consultations and only four fairways hit in regulation. The two-time WGC winner could move as high as 10th in world with win and is making his 79th worldwide start since his last victory (2013 Open).

• Despite the small field, Chapultepec Golf Club is on pace to yield the most hole outs in an event on the PGA Tour this season (there have been 61 through three rounds).
