Second-place Thomas' swing makes him sick

MEXICO CITY – It was so bad, Justin Thomas wanted to throw up.

No, the American wasn’t suffering from the same stomach virus that made Henrik Stenson withdraw from the WGC-Mexico Championship and caused Phil Mickelson’s caddie, Jim “Bones” Mackay, to take a day off for the first time since 2012. It was his swing.

“I swung it terribly yesterday. It was far and away the most disgusted I’ve ever been with my golf swing,” Thomas said. “I sent it to my dad and I told him I wanted to throw up after watching the video, it was so bad.”

Thomas spent about 40 minutes on the range on Thursday after an opening 69 working with his swing coach father, Mike, via video to figure out what was wrong. The solution was an old drill he used last year on his way to winning the CIMB Classic, and the result was a second-round 66 that moved him into a share of second place.

Thomas, who already has three victories this season on the PGA Tour including back-to-back triumphs in Hawaii, is vying to become the first player since David Duval in 1999 to win four times in a season before the Masters.
