Hadwin on cusp of OWGR top 50 after Valspar win

Just three weeks after cracking the top 100 in the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time in his career, Adam Hadwin is on the verge of another rankings milestone.

The Canadian held off Patrick Cantlay for his maiden victory at the Valspar Championship, a win that moved Hadwin from No. 98 in the world to No. 51. It’s a jump that would have netted Hadwin a spot in next week’s WGC-Dell Match Play Championship were he not getting married March 24.

While he didn’t get the win, Cantlay did take care of his major medical extension with a solo second-place finish, and he also rocketed from No. 1,419 to No. 239 in the latest rankings.

Other changes from Innisbrook included Jim Herman, who went from 89th to 76th with a T-3 finish, and Tony Finau, whose solo fifth took him from No. 77 to No. 70 and onto the cusp of a match-play berth. Jason Dufner, who finished T-11 on the Copperhead Course, jumped from 70th to 65th to punch his ticket to Austin.

There was only one change this week among the top 10, as Henrik Stenson moved past Jordan Spieth to No. 5 following his T-7 finish in Tampa. Dustin Johnson remains atop the standings, followed by Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama, Stenson and Spieth. Justin Thomas comes in at No. 7, followed by Adam Scott, Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia.

After announcing that he would skip this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational and with his future schedule in flux, Tiger Woods dropped 21 spots to No. 734 in the world.
