Furyk, Weir round out Prez Cup assistant captains

PALM HARBOR, Fla. – The team rooms at the upcoming Presidents Cup have gotten a little more crowded.

For the first time in the event’s 23-year history, both captains will be allowed to have four assistant captains on their roster. The change matches the one implemented for last year’s Ryder Cup at Hazeltine.

U.S. captain Steve Stricker had previously named Tiger Woods, Davis Love III and Fred Couples as assistants, and Tuesday at the Valspar Championship he announced that the fourth American earpiece will go to Jim Furyk.

For Furyk, it’s another responsibility to add at an already busy time. He had previously been named captain for the 2018 Ryder Cup in France, and he follows in the footsteps of Love who served as an assistant in Korea in 2015 before captaining last year’s Ryder Cup squad.

“I would lie to say that being part of this team will definitely help me in those preparations; I’d also be slighting the Presidents Cup to tell you that I love this event, as well,” Furyk said. “I’m just happy to get the call, and I’m excited about the opportunity to have to balance my time, put it that way.”

International captain Nick Price added former Masters champ Mike Weir, who joins a group of assistants that includes Ernie Els, Geoff Ogilvy and Tony Johnstone. Weir played in the event five times, most recently in 2009, and is eager to reprise a role in the biennial matches.

“I was very excited to get the call from Nick to be a part of this,” Weir said. “Nick has always been a guy I’ve looked up to in my career, along with these other two guys I’ve competed against. I’ve always felt like the Presidents Cup has been done the right way.”

The Presidents Cup will be held Sept. 28-Oct. 1 at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, N.J.
