Fisher closes strong to earn Match Play invite

MEXICO CITY – Ross Fisher needed a bounce-back round after Saturday’s 72 at the WGC-Mexico Championship dropped him into a tie for 14th place, but this went well beyond a competitive desire for progress.

Fisher began the week in Mexico 76th in the World Golf Ranking and was hoping to crack the top 64 and earn a spot into the WGC-Dell Match Play in three weeks, so to close with three consecutive birdies for a 65 and a tie for third was a victory of sorts.

“This was the last chance for both the Match Play and the Masters,” said Fisher, who will easily move inside the top 60 with his finish. “It’s not going to be enough for the Masters, but I think this will get me to [the Match Play], so that’s nice.”

The top 50 on March 27, the day after the final round at the Match Play, will earn a spot at the year’s first major, giving the Englishman another chance to earn his Masters’ invitation.
